Free Jim Tucker's chickens!

If anyone ever needs a handy example of unnecessary government intrusion, they should clip and save the story in today's Northwest Florida Daily News about former city councilman Jim Tucker's chickens.

The city's Code Enforcement Board is after Tucker to get rid of three chickens roaming on his property that are apparently in violation of a city code.

"I don't want to be imposed on by government." Tucker told reporter Wendy Victora. "I want government to help me in times of need."

Here's an idea: Why don't we get rid of the Code Enforcement Board? At the least, why don't we get rid of petty city ordinances? Or, let's at least stop wasting taxpayer's money investigating and enforcing this sort of silliness. Tucker's not raising a hundred head of cattle; it's three chickens for cripe's sake!

Tucker's chickens should remain free! Is anyone with me on this?

the chickens could be severely endangered: the goat rapist might be on the hunt for his next victim(s). this code is there for the protection of the vulnerable chickens. how can you be so insensitive, pat?!**

I'd agree with you, except I used to live across the road from a pig farm in Alabama. And, my parents live next door to someone who has a HUGE pot-bellied pig. (Whoever tried to call those things minature?) Code enforcement can be a slippery slope, no pun intended.

Have you ever seen how dangerous a chicken can be if they get mad? This is serious stuff...first you ok three chickens, then there's four, and before you know it, the whole town is taken over by wild chickens...and then we'll really waste a lot of time wondering why the chickens crossed the road?

How do you spell tongue?

And do chickens even have tongues?

Or cheeks?

"And do chickens even have tongues?"

I don't know, why don't you ask Pat.

...just kidding, Mr. Rice.

First of all, sorry for the "off-topicness":

I'm surprised we haven't seen a post from you, Pat, on all the Mitt Romney bashing going on with everyone trying to destroy (or at least damage) him and his religion.

Now, a few weeks ago, you blogged (twice, actually) about the controversy over whether or not Don Imus should be fired and if he was indeed a bigot.

Now, we have Rev. Sharpton attacking Gov. Romney and his religion. I don't see nearly as much outcry. How does this hypocrite Sharpton get by with these things. Mr. Sharpton is a bigot, he thinks all the rules apply to everyone except him. I say we fire Rev. Sharpton off his radio program. Teach him a lesson.

...And this is only one of the things flaring up in the wake of Mr. Romney's campaign.

I like to think Mitt Romney will be somewhat similar to JFK. Kennedy's religion was questioned very much as he was running, yet he still overcame and led the people.

I don't know, maybe I'm just ranting and raving for no reason, but I think it's funny how people get away with stuff and how hypocritical they can be.

There is a time and a place for everything. I wouldn't want chickens living next door to me. But Tucker's location seems pretty benign for having chickens: its commercial, on 98 with no residences (except for crack houses across 98) nearby. Were there actually any complaints lodged regarding these chickens? Seems like our City nanny supervisors could give Tucker a break.

If people had common sense, we would not need alot of these ignorant intrusive laws. But life does not work that way. I am against government involvement in every aspect of our lives but as time goes on the need seems to be there. I personally see no harm in three chickens, but does that become three chickens, a goat, a pig, a miniture horse and so on. Mr Tucker having been a FWB council member is well aware of the laws and has contruibuted to some of the nonsense laws we have here today. Like I said common sense is lacking and I can see this issue snowballing into larger things. We don't get to pick and choose, well most of us don't, the laws we obey, so I say Mr Tucker make arangements for the chickens in a legal enviornment.

I fully understand your position. Mr. Tucker probably uses the NWF Daily News as flooring for his chicken pen, and is so loving that he changes it daily. With regards to code enforcement, there are neighbors who regularly abuse their neighbors landmarks with noise, junk cars, rodent infestation and reduced market value.

how stupid ! code enforcement must not have enough to do; forget about the chickens. Try ot make the city a better place; don't pick us to death. No pun intended.

I can't see a problem with a few chickens running around on someone's private property. But those trumpet geese are something else. Those things are dangerous, and will attack you, and are just obnoxious. Its hard to believe the City of Fort Walton will allow pit bulls in the city limits, but not chickens. I have never heard of a chicken causing enough harm to send someone to the hospital. I think the city codes should be re-visited. It may be too late for Mr. Tuckers chickens, but its not to late for your children or pets saftey.

Code enforcement needs more to do. Leave the chickens alone.

Drew-- Let me just say that Mitt Romney is no JFK. Your attempting to compare apples and oranges. Kennedy's religion did not support a 100 year ban on blacks being priests in the church. Mormonism supports racism, sexism, and child abuse. FLDS (fundamentalist) mormons force 14 year old girls to become "sister wives" and marry their uncles. In many cases, you can see the physical problems brought on by the genetic mixes.
Mormons believe blacks have the mark of Cain. All darker skinned people are going to hell, because they have in some way sinned against God.

All I am saying is that If the racism doesn't bother you, the child abuse should. All reverends, including Sharpton, should be against that.

I do agree with one thing you said. You might just be ranting and raving for no reason. ---Jerel

I think it's a good thing when former administrators are scrutinized just as objectively as any other citizen. In Walton County, if you were a part of the government in your lifetime, you are virtually free from any code enforcement burdens...must be nice...
as for the chickens though, let them be...
