MSNBC fires Imus

Well, Don Imus is no longer part of MSNBC.

As you know from my previous blog on this subject, I'm sorry to see him pulled from morning cable television. I loved his show's vicious satire of some of our most pompous politicians and other public figures.

But I also understand why so many people believe he needed to go after his incredibly stupid characterization of the Rutgers University women's basketball team as "nappy-headed ho's." As a number of people who responded to my initial blog point out, that comment was racially insensitive and sexually offensive to the extreme, and it was a comment about a group of young women who did nothing to deserve the derision.

I'm still storry to see Imus go. But I understand why others believe he needed to get the boot. And I thank you all for sharing your opinions about Imus with me.

Imus committed a major crime, a white man saying something negative about a group of blacks. If a black media personality made equally disparaging comments about the Tennessee team it would have been a non-issue.

Let's see...Your last 4 entries are about Don Imus (2), trolley buses, John McCain, and drug laws.
I would much rather you turn your high-powered intellect toward local topics such as the Evers family and farm subsidies, how much our local governments give to charity (and how they are arbitrarily selected), who the top 10 recipients of Okaloosa tax dollars are (and why), what our county lobbyist is doing (daily or weekly), the real story behind the new Niceville Wal-Mart and the wetlands it is replacing, and the facts behind the massive and seemingly eternal Niceville Stormwater Retention Pond project.
Don't get me wrong. Years ago I tried to write a blog myself, so I know how difficult it can be. I believe, however, there are many subjects ripe for investigative reporting in our local area, and the Daily News has Pulitzer-prize potential.
As Michael Douglas/Gordon Gekko said to Charlie Sheen/Bud Fox, "This is your wake-up call, pal. Go to work."
Keep smiling and warm regards...

Why was the decision made after pressure and threats from Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton? If it was the right decision it should have been made BEFORE those two met with the network execs.

Firing Imus is bowing to everything and everyone opposing 1st amendment rights. Nappy means kinky by the way. Hos is slang term used by black rap artists. Need I write more. Jesse "Jackass son", and the reverend Al 'Pimpton" are hypocrites of the worst order.

Alright, to the anonymous @ 9:58pm on the 12th:

**Cover the eyes of the easily offended**
Please SHUT UP!! Please, take this in all offense. Imus, or any other legal American citizen, has a right to free speech, but that doesn’t make it right to say racist things on a major news network(s). Nappy also means “a diaper”. But I don’t think Mr. Imus called the Rutgers players diapers. “Nappy”, in the context of how he used it is used in derogatory reference to the hair of black people, and is from 1950 racist slang. “Ho” is not a racist word, it’s a sexist word used by all kinds of people to put-down women.

And let me just make some clarification to many peoples’ posts: Not all rappers or rap music is offensive…Just the gangster rap, of the likes of Snoop Dog, 50 Cent, etc.

I don’t agree with Jesse Jackson or Rev. Al Sharpton on A LOT of things, but I agree with them that the line has been crossed. It’s one thing to use these kinds of words on a gangster rap video, but it’s completely different when this kind of language is used on two of the most reliable news organizations in the world, NBC and CBS. Those networks and their parent companies did the right thing, even if it might have been for the wrong reasons.

Anna Nicole is gone and now Imus has been ejected. What will the radio/television media now do to attract viewers and sponsors. The biggest national story that I now see is possibly waiting to unfold. Perhaps Larry King will moon the audience on his 50th year celebration. It will give CNN/FOX/MSN etc. much to profit by and his replacement something that he/she may use to attain stardom. As far as Imus goes, I forgive him and will focus on making myself better.

I wonder how long it’ll be before JJ and Fat Albert realize that since Imus was less than 2 years into a 5 year contract that he’s due a hefty termination fee from CBS. You can bet as soon as they do they’ll raise a stink and demand that they be given the money to help the “victims” who claim to be scarred for life.

He should be fired for being stupid. Maybe he was trying to be "hip," but it was obviously a case of not engaging the brain before spouting off.

And let's clean up the rap music. Our kids love it and when you hear the lyrics, you want to cry for their lost innocence.

Are all the STD's, abortions and violence we are suffering not enough yet? Can the media clean up its act a little, please? How about we highlight a few heroes and aim a little bit higher.
