Attending "Freedom School"

I'm blogging this week from Tempe, Ariz., where I'm attending a gathering of editors and publishers from Freedom Communications, the parent company of the Northwest Florida Daily News.

The latter part of the week is our annual editors conference. But the first part of the week is "Freedom School." No, it's not indoctrination. Rather, it's a chance for us to discuss and debate the libertarian philosophy that guides the opinions on the editorial pages of our newspapers.

I like libertarianism. We're not Democrats and we're not Republicans. We're not liberals, and we're not conservatives. Instead, Freedom's libertarian philosophy champions:

-- Repect for individual rights.
-- Community service.
-- Lifelong learning.
-- Integrity.
-- Individual responsibility.

If something particularly interesting comes up this week, I'll post it on my blog, get your feedback, and report it back to my fellow editors and publishers. Cheers.

You say you’re not Republican, but you believe in individual responsibility and integrity. Two hallmarks of the Republican Party that are absent from and kept out of the Democratic Party.

Libertarians are just closet Democrats who are afraid to admit it in public. You're description sounds more like you're describing a Christian than a political position.

It is clear that many people share the same character values, so why do we feel the need to constantly argue just becasue of the labels we have given ourselves? I look forward to the future of the Daily News as an entity of integrity in my community.

I will teach you the one lesson you need to know about Freedom. Those military airplanes overhead; that's the sound of freedom. The scent of the surf; that's the smell of Freedom. The texture of that crisp dollar in your pocket; that's the feel of Freedom. A ham sandwich; that's the taste of Freedom. Yum.

So Ron Paul gets your vote I assume since he's really the only libertarian candidate.

If I really had to classify myself I guess that I would say that my tendency is also Libertarian.

My main drawback to pursuing this philosophy in the voting booth is that at this time it is a dead end road. The Libertarians just do not have sufficient political ability. Ability is not the correct word, but I am not sure of the correct word. I feel that I would be wasting my vote.

To the person who who said that a Libertarian is a closet democrat, you could not be farther from the truth. A Libertarian is much closer to a traditional Republican that anything else. Unfortunately modern Republicans have got religion and politics mixed up. The also have got a little too enamored with big government, just like the democrats.

All of this is admirable, no doubt, and quite possible, even in today's society to pass on along to everyone, but freedom gives us the choice to accept or reject all of these conditions. That being said it is somewhat difficult to get this message to as many as possible with the advent of instant media coverage since 1980. Bottom line as long as our system is more divisive and less compromise, the less this will get passed on, and in time none of this will be around. Both of the major political parties share equally in this decline of values.Partisan
