build OC's sidewalk!

You have to wonder whether Okaloosa County has something against Ocean City Elementary School.

The county has a $292 million budget this year, but can't find the $137,000 to build sidewalks so Ocean City's students on their way to and from school have a safe way to avoid dangerous, winding Essex Road.

This is not a new issue. According to school officials, the road has been a hazard for the children for years.

Just recently, the county spent more than $373,000 building a bathroom near the boat landing at Marler Park. If the county can find that much money for a toilet for boaters, they ought to be able to find $137,000 to build a sidewalk so school children can be safe.

The county's inability to find money for the sidewalk stinks as much as the sewer plant they've kept in operation next to Ocean City Elementary for decades.

I like the comment best by Mr. Amunds that children get hit all the time on Racetrack road. I guess in his own little mind this makes everything OK. Is his reasoning that "kids have to be hit by cars somewhere"! I say we pour a sidewalk over Mr. Amunds mouth.

A few of my close friends jump started the plan for sidewalks next to Pryor Middle School a few years back. A girl had been hit and killed by a car and nothing was being done to fix the child pedestrian problem, so we got citizens to sign a petition and we got the sidewalks approved and eventually paved.

It only takes one life of a innocent child to be wasted before people realize the reality of the safety of our precious children.

It's just too bad that that one life could have been saved with less than 1/20th of a percentage point of the county's budget.

It's too bad...

Many places in FWB, there are only partial sidewalks. At the corner of Coral and Temple, there is a sidewalk that extends two lots west on Coral and one lot north on Temple.
The way the county (and the city) works is "wait and see" until enough people yell loud enough to get their attention!

I did not like the implication in your story that sidewalks would be used for children to ride bicycles. Sidewalks are not for bicycles. In most places it is against the law to ride bicycles on a sidewalk.

If sidewalks were needed at Kenwood Elementary you can bet the money would have been readily available.

Whoever doesn't think bicycles can't be used on sidewalks can talk to the little girl I knew that was killed when riding home from school.

Under Florida law, when riding on a sidewalk or crosswalk, a bicyclist has all the rights and duties applicable to a pedestrian.

Learn your facts! I'm fed up with people faking false statements and lying to others.

Find money for something the people of the County need, what a joke. I need my pig trail road paved, we need sidewalks, we need roads but we get court houses, bike lanes on North 85, haven't seen a bike in them yet, $350.000 shit houses, conference centers, proposed EOC's in flood zones and every damn project these elected caterers to special interest want. But you know what with the piss poor turn out in Tuesdays election, we deserve every bit of the bullshit we get and than some. Eleven percent in Crestview and about the same in FWB, we voters suck.
