Dr. Strangelove and Destin

An aerial view of the then-undeveloped Destin Harbor was featured in the 1964 movie "Dr. Strangelove."

On Wednesday, someone sent the following link to the Northwest Florida Daily News.

Click here: Dr. Strangelove film clip includes Destin, Florida

It shows what the harbor looked like then, and what it looks like more recently. (The recent photo is from 2004, I think.) Clearly, the Emerald Coast has changed in 40-plus years. Take a gander at the past, then share your thoughts....

The destination of Destin offers a place for people to kick back and relax and enjoy the life on here on the Emerald Coast. I don't mind the development, to an extent. The more people that can experience this way of life, the better, of course as long as the integrity of Destin and original motivations for coming to this beautiful place - to enjoy to beautiful weather, the softest sugar beaches, the great fishing, and the kicked-back lifestyle - remain.

The 1964 vision looks like the 2007 version of parts of South Walton, including Grayton and Blue Mountain Beach and the areas surrounding Seaside.

Hey, and you know what? I think there's just enough space for a Wal-Mart in the upper middle of the recent photograph!

Some folks call this progress.

There is a thing called private property rights though. The people who own the property have a right to use it as they see fit as long as they act within the law.

If you see undeveloped property that you want to stay undeveloped, then purchase it at market value from the owner and do with it as you wish. If you’re not going to do that quit trying to tell others what to do with their property.

Wow. Take a close look and see how much more narrow the beach is. That impressed me as much as anything.

Nice bomber in the picture...
but you could have also mentioned that our 'wonderful' representative at the time, Sikes I believe, redrew the lines so holiday isle wouldn't be inside the gulf islands national seashore... and it just looks soooo much nicer trashed in its current form... something tells me the daily news probably even editorialized in favor of it back then...

That is one of the saddest things I've ever seen. This area has been totally destroyed so that a few can get rich. And they aren't done yet - as Peter Box will begin building his concrete highrise boxes on the bay side of sand bars soon.

There are plenty of places in Florida that already looked like that in 1964 and those are the places where the tourists should have gone and I wished they go there today.

We should all hang our heads in shame. This is the only planet we have, after all.

We've got a billion other planets to destroy after we're done with this one in a couple thousand years.

Bring on the high-rise boxes!!

But seriously, if you don't like the change (and yes, change can be good) then go buy some property on the Gulf and complain.

...If you think Destin is bad, then I want to put you on plane and ship you out to Japan. They have the most expensive and very densely populated real estate in the (universe).

And, in case your wondering, I don't live in Destin, or even on the water. *Gasp!*

Like the old saying goes..."A developer is somebody who wants to build a house in the woods. An environmentalist is somebody who already has a house in the woods."
